about

I found this poem in my wife's great grandfather's hand written book of poems. Poems that he had collected in his life - this one from the late 1800's or early 1900's. It was not credited but after some searching I found it was written by the 19th century American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox

lyrics

The Traveller
(lyrics: Ella Wilcox Wheeler)
(music: Blair Babcock)

Who travels alone with his eyes on the heights
‘Tho he laughs in the daytime, he oft weeps through the night
For courage goes down with the set of the sun
When the toil of the journey is all borne by one
He speeds but to grief, tho’ full gaily he rides
Who travels alone without love at his side

Who travels alone without lover or friend
But hurries from nothing to naught at the end
Though great be his winnings and high be his goal
He is bankrupt in wisdom and beggard in soul
Life’s one gift of value to him is denied
Who travels alone without love at side

It is easy enough in this world to make haste
If we live for that purpose but think of the waste
For life is a poem to leisurely read
And the joy of the journey lies not in the speed
Vain his achievement, and petty his pride
Who travels alone without love at his side
